Prof. Owuor Olungah is a professor of Anthropology at the Institute of Anthropology, Gender & African Studies, University of Nairobi. He has been in the academic world for the last 26 years doing research, teaching and consultancy. He is a PhD holder in Medical Anthropology with a bias in Reproductive Health. He has diverse research interest and experiences ranging from socio-cultural concerns, reproductive health and rights, women in democracy, child rights, drug use, Women in Agriculture, Female Genital Mutilation, Climate change and Adaptation and lived experiences of communities. He has a deeper understanding of culture, gender and their centrality in human development and believes in equity as well as equality in human endeavors. He served as the Director of the Institute of Anthropology, Gender & African Studies for six years from 2014-2020. He has published a number of papers in refereed journals and supervised more than 100 postgraduate students. He has consulted for a number of organizations in the local, regional and international arena among them UNFPA, UNICEF, OSIEA, CRR, UNDP, ICRW, AMREF, NEPHAK, and Government of Kenya among others. He is a passionate individual in the rights of women to Reproductive Health and Rights. He was been a recipient of a number of awards and has collaborated with colleagues from diverse academic and socio-cultural backgrounds. Currently, he serves as a member of the Gender Mainstreaming Committee and Vice Chair of the Skills Gap Analysis Committee of the University of Nairobi. He is also a member of National Cohesion and Integration Committee and Anti-Corruption Committee of the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences, University of Nairobi. He is currently a member of the Postgraduate Studies Committee and the thematic head of the Gender and Development unit at the IAGAS.
