WHO WE ARE

Committed to Excellence

The Anthropological Association of Kenya (AAKe) is a professional association of anthropologists and professionals engaging in anthropological work as reflected in the specialized domains of anthropology.

The Association’s idea was conceived when the alumni and staff of the Institute of Anthropology, Gender and African Studies, University of Nairobi saw the need for a national body of anthropologists. Although there were institutional associations in different universities, alumni groups, and social media groups, a nationally representative formal body could better advance anthropology as a science and as a profession in Kenya: an association was in the making.

In early 2020, a group of anthropologists initiated the process of formal registration of the Association under the Societies Act with the Institute of Anthropology, Gender and African Studies, University of Nairobi as its headquarters.
