The Anthropological Association of Kenya (AAKe) is a professional association of anthropologists and other related fields.
The idea of an association was conceived in 2012 during the Pan African Anthropological Association meeting held in Nairobi, Kenya. However, the idea did not materialise until March 2020 when a small group of anthropologists informed by the need for a national body of anthropologists decided to work on the registration process.
Although there were alumni and social media groups, a nationally representative formal body was found to be best placed to advance anthropology as a science and the professional interests of anthropologists in Kenya.
The Anthropological Association of Kenya (AAKe) was officially launched in March 2021.
The Association draws membership from a wide array of professionals practising anthropology and students of anthropology. Our members work in the public, private and non-governmental sectors in administration, research, communication, law and advocacy, academic institutions and community-based organisations.
We are proud to be the pioneer association to bring anthropologists and professionals in anthropological work under one umbrella association in Kenya. We value diversity and inclusivity as we seek to make the association robust and responsive to the advancement of human welfare regionally and beyond.
The overall goal of AAKe is to advance anthropology as a science and profession in Kenya.
