About

Who we are

The Anthropological Association of Kenya (AAKe) is a professional association of anthropologists and other related fields. The idea of an association was conceived in 2012 during the Pan African Anthropological Association meeting held in Nairobi, Kenya. However, the idea did not materialise until March 2020 when a small group of anthropologists informed by the need for a national body of anthropologists decided to work on the registration process. Although there were alumni and social media groups, a nationally representative formal body was found to be best placed to advance anthropology as a science and the professional interests of anthropologists in Kenya.

The Association draws membership from a wide array of professionals practising anthropology and students of anthropology. Our members work in the public, private and non-governmental sectors in administration, research, communication, law and advocacy, academic institutions and community based organisations. We are proud to be the pioneer association to bring anthropologists and professionals in anthropological work under one umbrella association in Kenya. We value diversity and inclusivity as we seek to make the association robust and responsive to the advancement of human welfare regionally and beyond.

The Association pursues the following objectives:

  1. To promote the scientific study and professional practice of anthropology by encouraging the development of all branches of anthropology;
  2. To enhance the contribution of anthropology to the promotion of the public welfare/good, and peace and prosperity;
  3. To advance scientific interest and inquiry in anthropology and all related areas of knowledge and practice;
  4. To promote high standards of professional ethics, competence, conduct, education, qualifications, and achievement amongst anthropologists
  5. To facilitate the dissemination of anthropological knowledge through conferences, meetings, lectures, professional contacts, reports, papers, discussions, and publications.
